Decarbonization Roadmap
Reduction of Non-Revenue Water (NRW)
Sustainability Programs
Climate-Resilient Water System
To make the water system climate-resilient, Maynilad adopts a comprehensive water management approach that includes water source diversification, enhanced energy efficiency through the use of renewable energy, and advanced treatment technology acquisition. We continuously enhance our processes and infrastructure to withstand the impact of climate change and natural disasters on our operations.
Energy Management and Renewables
Maynilad sustains efficient energy consumption in its operations, and explores renewable options like solar energy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. These measures resulted in savings of 20.79 million kWh of grid electricity from 2017 to 2022, and a reduction of 14,734 metric tons of carbon emissions.
Waste Reduction and Recycling
Maynilad actively reduces waste through programs like “Green Badge” that upcycles employee uniforms, and “Timbayan” that aims to repurpose plastic containers. The company also encourages the reuse of paper and office supplies, and has actively pushed for paperless billing among customers even as it transitions toward the use of digital platforms for its various transactions. Maynilad’s major step towards a circular economy is its move to recycle treated wastewater by converting it to potable water supply.
Ensuring Continuity of Supply
Plugging Water Losses
Maynilad optimizes water supply through a robust Non-Revenue Water Program that has resulted in significant reductions in water losses from leaks, unauthorized use, and inaccurate measurement. Solutions such as active leakage control, pressure management, massive pipe replacement, and anti-illegal connection drives allow the company to recover more water supply for distribution to customers.
Protecting our Watersheds, Protecting the Future
Maynilad champions the restoration and safeguarding of our watersheds. In 2007, Maynilad launched “Plant for Life,” a massive reforestation program that aims to rehabilitate and sustain the critical watersheds that replenish raw water supply for Metro Manila and nearby provinces. Since then, Maynilad has planted more than one million tree saplings and mangrove propagules in the Angat, Ipo, and La Mesa watersheds, and along the Manila Bay and Laguna Lake coastlines of Cavite and Muntinlupa. This program has enabled Maynilad to reduce its carbon emissions by around 25,000 tons per year. It is also being pursued in support of the “Million TreeChallenge” of the government, which aims to plant 100 million trees by 2030. Ensuring the health of our vital water resources means ensuring a water-secure future for the nation.
Responsible Wastewater Management for Sustainable Communities
Maynilad provides essential sewerage and sanitation services that are key to protecting the environment and the health of communities in the West Zone. With a wastewater infrastructure spanning 23 treatment facilities,111 lift stations, and 625 kilometers of sewer lines, we ensure compliance with the stringent effluent quality standards of the Department of Environment andNatural Resources (DENR). Maynilad is also working to reduce the discharge of treated effluent by converting it to NEW WATER, or potable supply sourced from used water.
Community Development
Beyond providing water and wastewater services, Maynilad leads capacity-building programs that help improve the living conditions of marginalized communities through W.A.S.H. (water, sanitation, and hygiene) and livelihood development initiatives.
Customer-centric Innovations
Customers are our growth partners, and we strive to elevate their experience with us. Towards this end, Maynilad has introduced innovations that will promote faster and more convenient transactions, such as the new QR Code facility that allows for contactless customer requests handling, as well as the “My Water Bill” online portal that makes bill monitoring more accessible.
