PBBM inaugurates Maynilad’s Poblacion Water Treatment Plant

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. (PBBM) led today, December 15, 2023, the formal inauguration of Maynilad’s Poblacion Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in Muntinlupa City.

Joining PBBM in the inauguration were Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, Muntinlupa Mayor Rozzano Rufino “Ruffy” Biazon, Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) Administrator Leonor Cleofas, MWSS Chief Regulator Patrick Ty, and Maynilad officials led by Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan.

The Php11-billion Poblacion WTP—Maynilad’s third water treatment facility that draws water from Laguna Lake—is a vital part of the company’s plan to develop alternative sources of water to ensure long-term water security for its customers.

Designed to produce 150 million liters per day (MLD) at full capacity, this facility will serve around one million Maynilad customers in Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, and Cavite. The additional water supply it produces will help to minimize service interruptions due to raw water quality shifts in Laguna Lake, which have been occurring with more frequency owing to the effects of climate change.

This technologically advanced treatment plant uses a multi-stage process of Dissolved Air Flotation, Cloth Filter, Biological Aerated Filter, Ultrafiltration, Reverse Osmosis, and Chlorination to ensure that the water from Laguna Lake passes the Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water (PNSDW) of the Department of Health.

Set to produce an initial 50 MLD this month, the Poblacion WTP is targeted for full operations by the first half of 2024. This new facility is part of Maynilad’s Php220-billion service enhancement program from 2023 to 2027, which aims to promote enhanced water sustainability and climate resiliency.

At present, Maynilad has two treatment plants in Barangay Putatan, Muntinlupa, that draw water from Laguna Lake and produce a combined 300 MLD of water supply for customers in the south.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base. It is the concessionaire of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (certain portions), Quezon City (certain portions), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario, all in Cavite Province.
