West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) has been honored with the Founders’ Honor Award from Bentley Systems for its innovative use of digital technology in advancing potable water reuse.
The award recognizes Maynilad’s application of hydraulic modeling software OpenFlows WaterGEMS to optimize the distribution of NEW WATER—highly purified wastewater treated to meet drinking water standards. This technology is being implemented at Maynilad’s first NEW WATER facility in Parañaque City, which supplies 10 million liters per day (MLD) of potable reused water to Barangays San Dionisio and San Isidro.
Using OpenFlows WaterGEMS, Maynilad engineers simulated multiple distribution scenarios to determine the ideal pipe sizes, tank capacities, and pumping requirements for efficiently delivering NEW WATER supply. The software also enabled real-time network adjustments based on site conditions, ensuring stable water pressure, efficient flow management, and faster project execution.
“Leveraging digital technology in our NEW WATER initiative enhances operational efficiency and strengthens water security for our customers,” said Engr. Ronald Padua, Maynilad Vice President and Head of Water Supply Operations.
Maynilad began exploring potable water reuse in 2019 as part of its efforts to develop alternative water sources and enhance water sustainability. In 2022, it established its first NEW WATER treatment plant at the Parañaque Water Reclamation Facility, working closely with regulators and industry experts to ensure safe implementation.
Bentley Systems, a global leader in infrastructure software, grants the Founders’ Honor Award to organizations demonstrating outstanding innovation in digital solutions for engineering and utility management.
Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire of Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) in the Philippines in terms of customer base. Its service area includes the cities of Manila (all but portions of San Andres and Sta. Ana), Quezon City (west of San Juan River, West Avenue, EDSA, Congressional, Mindanao Avenue, the northern part starting from the Districts of Holy Spirit and Batasan Hills), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas, and Malabon, all in Metro Manila; and the cities of Cavite, Bacoor, and Imus, and the municipalities of Kawit, Noveleta, and Rosario, all in the province of Cavite.
