Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) was recognized for its use of compact wastewater treatment technologies during the ASEAN Corporate Sustainability Awards held recently at the Intercontinental Hotel in Makati.
The company’s “Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Facilities in Quezon City” Project was declared first runner-up in the Product/Service Innovation Category of the ASEAN Corporate Sustainability Awards. Under this project, Maynilad was able to build 15 wastewater treatment plants in the small, densely populated areas around the San Juan River Basin through the use of compact treatment technologies.
Through this initiative, Maynilad was able to save 47% in lot area since the facilities only took up a total of 18,530 sq.m. (square meters) compared to the initial requirement of 35,054 sq.m. These facilities have a combined treatment capacity of 70,607 million liters of wastewater per day, and can serve some 127,000 households.
“One of the challenges we encountered in implementing our wastewater projects is the lack of sufficiently sized lots because the areas that we serve are densely populated. This made us look for innovative yet prudent ways to implement our projects so we can meet the needs of our customers and protect the environment,” said Maynilad President and CEO Ricky P. Vargas.
The ASEAN Corporate Sustainability Awards aims to support organizations in the process of evaluating their sustainability strategy, performance and goals. It also aims to inspire comprehensive exchange of ideas and best practices in Sustainability in the ASEAN region to identify field models for Sustainability Excellence.
Maynilad is an agent and contractor of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (certain areas), Quezon City (certain areas), Makati (certain areas), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon—all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario—all in Cavite Province.
