Maynilad to utilize state-of-the-art leak detection technology

Maynilad, the private water concessionaire for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, has engaged the services of Pressure Pipe Inspection Company (PPIC) to train Maynilad engineers in the use of Sahara® – a state-of-the-art technology that accurately detects leaks, pockets of trapped gas, and structural defects in water main lines.  PPIC is a world leader in large diameter water and wastewater pipeline condition assessment.

Sahara® uses a sensor that can be inserted into any pipe at least 2” in size.  The sensor can determine the location of leaks as small as 1 liter/hour and other pipe defects to within 18” (500-mm) in real time.  With this technology, pipe inspection can be done without interrupting water service. Maynilad can intensify its leak detection efforts without affecting its water delivery services to its customers.

“Customer focus is key in every aspect of our operations.  We are committed to modernizing our infrastructure while ensuring the safe, reliable delivery of water to our customers.” said Rogelio L. Singson, Maynilad president.

Since 2007, Maynilad has brought down its water loss level from 66% to 59% through an aggressive NRW management program that the company launched under new owners, Metro Pacific Investments Corp. and DMCI Holdings, Inc.  For every 1% reduction in NRW level, Maynilad recovers around 23 million liters of water a day that it allocates to areas that need additional supply.  Maynilad’s bid to reduce its water loss level is in line with the company’s efforts to improve water supply and pressure in the entire West Zone.

Singson, PPIC President Brian Mergelas and PPIC VP for Corporate Development David Roy sign the service agreement at the Maynilad Head Office in Balara, Quezon City.  Witnessing the contract signing are other Maynilad officials.
