West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) is spending some P4.6 billion to improve and expand its wastewater coverage in Muntinlupa and Paranaque. More than P2.8 billion will go to laying 60 kilometres of sewer lines and completing preparatory works for its Parañaque Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Another P1.7 billion will be used by Maynilad to construct its Muntinlupa Wastewater Treatment Plant and a 6 kilometer conveyance system in Muntinlupa. Once completed, the sewerage plant will have the capacity to treat almost 70 million cubic meters of wastewater per day (CMD) and will benefit some 58,000 households in Barangays Cupang and Tunasan in Muntinlupa.
“In line with our commitment to reduce the pollution load in the major water systems in the West Zone, almost half of our capital expenditure budget this year, some P8.2 billion, was allotted for wastewater management projects. We are accelerating projects for wastewater to meet our service obligations to the government and to protect the health of our customers and the environment,” said Maynilad President and CEO Ricky P. Vargas.
Liquid waste from households and establishments is a potential source of disease and pollution. Releasing untreated liquid waste in the environment also pollutes waterways and the atmosphere. The prevalence of waterborne ailments may be limited if liquid waste is properly collected, treated and disposed.
Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base. It is the concessionaire of the MWSS for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (all but portions of San Andres & Sta. Ana), Quezon City (west of San Juan River, West Avenue, EDSA, Congressional, Mindanao Avenue, the northern part starting from the Districts of the Holy Spirit & Batasan Hills), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario, all in Cavite Province.
