West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) recovered around 10 MLD (million liters per day) of water, which was previously lost through an underground or “non-surfacing” leak that Maynilad recently discovered gushing from a 900mm-diameter primary line along West Service Road near Sun Valley Drive, Parañaque City. The leak was found after Maynilad engineers conducted a series of pipe inspection and network audit activities in the area using state-of-the-art leak detection equipment and data analytics.
The photo shows a Maynilad employee during a routine inspection, marking the spot on the road where the leak was suspected to be flowing underground. The eventual repair of this “non-surfacing” leak yielded a supply recovery of 10 MLD, which gave rise to an average increase of 3 psi (pounds per square inch) in the water pressure of adjacent areas. This improved service levels for more than 100,000 customers from seven subdivisions within Parañaque City, bringing their supply availability to 24 hours at 7 psi pressure.
The proactive repair of pipe leaks is part of Maynilad’s Non-Revenue Water Management (NRW) Program, which seeks to bring down losses in the distribution system to generate more supply for distribution. The company aims to recover 100 MLD of water supply from NRW projects this year.
