Metro Pacific and DMCI-led Maynilad repaired 141,510 pipe leaks since the launch of its Non-Revenue Water (NRW) Reduction Program in 2008. About P710 million was spent for the company’s leak repair operations.
For this year alone, over 31,000 leaking pipes in the West Zone was repaired as of August. Maynilad has recently been repairing almost 40,000 leaks a year. Prior to reprivatisation in 2007, leak repair was only at 9,000 per year.
Also a major component of Maynilad’s NRW Reduction Program is the replacement of old pipelines. From 2008, Maynilad already replaced a total of 877 kilometers of pipes in different areas of the concession.
The proactive repair of leaks and replacement of old pipes contributed significantly to the company’s overall water recovery of 569 million liters per day (MLD) as of August 2012. This recovered supply is being used to provide still-unserved areas in the south with potable water supply.
“Maynilad inherited very old pipelines when water services were first privatized, which is why we have invested heavily in pipe replacements and leak repairs. Thankfully, these investments now show results in terms of recovered water that we now use to reach other people who need our services,” said Maynilad President and CEO Ricky P. Vargas.
Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base. It is a concessionaire of the MWSS for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (all but portions of San Andres & Sta. Ana), Quezon City (west of San Juan River, West Avenue, EDSA, Congressional, Mindanao Avenue, the northern part starting from the Districts of the Holy Spirit & Batasan Hills), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario, all in Cavite Province.
