Maynilad recovers 923 MLD of water

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) has recovered 923 million liters per day (MLD) of water since 2008 when it first launched its Non-Revenue Water Reduction (NRW) Program. This recovered volume is enough to fill up roughly 370 Olympic-size pools every day, and supply about 1.5 million households with potable water.

Maynilad’s NRW Reduction Program includes the regular replacement of old pipes. Since 2008, the company was able to replace a total of 1,709 kilometers of pipes, which is about 43% of the total water network Maynilad inherited after re-privatization in 2007.

Moreover, the company continues to operate state-of-the-art leak detection technologies. This enabled Maynilad to repair 27,936 pipe leaks in 2016 alone, bringing the total number of leaks repaired to 290,180 since 2008.

Maynilad’s NRW reduction program also includes meter and pressure management, active leakage control, primary line assessment, selective pipe replacement, and District Metered Area (DMA) management. The company has spent some ₱18.95 billion for this program since 2008.

For 2017, Maynilad is investing over ₱4 billion for its NRW Reduction Program, of which ₱2.7 billion will be allotted for pipe replacements in Quezon City, Navotas, Valenzuela, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas and Cavite. Meanwhile, some ₱200 million will be spent for leak repair projects. The rest of the budget will go to the replacement of old water meters, network diagnostics, and leak detection, among others.

“Through massive investments in water loss recovery, we have managed to attain an NRW reduction of 36 percentage points in a span of only nine years. We will continue on this track so that more water supply can be plowed back into the network for delivery to more customers,” Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez said.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base. It is the agent and contractor of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (certain portions), Quezon City (certain portions), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario, all in Cavite Province.
