West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) has recovered 838 million liters of water per day (MLD) since 2007 when the company was re-privatized under new owners. The water recovered—equivalent to filling up 334 Olympic-size swimming pools—is enough to supply the water needs of some 4.3 million people.
Maynilad has already spent nearly ₱25 billion on its Non-Revenue Water (NRW) management program to curb physical and commercial water losses, which stood at 66% prior to its re-privatization in 2007. Of the said amount, around ₱21.8 billion was spent on pipe replacement projects of the company, which inherited the oldest pipe network in Asia.
“When we took over Maynilad operations 15 years ago, the water distribution network in the West Zone was highly inefficient. We have since poured investments in pipe rehabilitation and modernization, which gradually enabled us to recover more water for distribution. Additional investments are needed to ensure sustained efficiency for the long term,” said Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez.
Maynilad’s NRW management program involve pipe and meter replacements, active leakage control using state-of-the-art leak detection technology, District Metered Areas establishment and maintenance, and sustained network diagnostic activities.
Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base. It is the concessionaire of the MWSS for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (all but portions of San Andres and Sta Ana), Quezon City (west of San Juan River, West Avenue, EDSA, Congressional, Mindanao Avenue, the northern part starting from the Districts of the Holy Spirit & Batasan Hills), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario, all in the Cavite Province.
