Maynilad partners with UP to advance water safety and quality

Maynilad and the University of the Philippines Diliman have partnered to enhance the country’s understanding of emerging pollutants in Metro Manila’s water sources and wastewater systems. This partnership underscores Maynilad’s commitment to public health and its proactive approach to maintaining safe, high-quality water services. Key representatives from both organizations were present at the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (seated, from left) Chair of UP Diliman’s Department of Chemical Engineering Dr. Marjorie L. Baynosa; Director of UP Diliman’s Institute of Chemistry Dr. Marlon T. Conato; Maynilad Head of Research, Assessment, and Special Projects Gian Carlo P. Reyes; Maynilad WATERLAB Head Christine T. Bagsik; Maynilad Chief Sustainability Officer Atty. Roel S. Espiritu; UP Diliman Vice Chancellor for Research and Development Dr. Carl Michael F. Odulio; Dean of UP Diliman’s College of Engineering Dr. Maria Antonia N. Tanchuling; and, UP RENEW Project leader Dr. Analiza P. Rollin.

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) has partnered with the University of the Philippines (UP) to enhance research on emerging pollutants in Metro Manila’s water sources and wastewater systems. This partnership reflects Maynilad’s proactive approach to ensuring the long-term safety and quality of its water services.

Although Maynilad’s water supply consistently meets the stringent Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water, the company recognizes the importance of staying ahead of potential future risks. Through this collaboration, UP will conduct comprehensive testing to assess the presence of unregulated pollutants that have been identified as emerging concerns in other countries.

“Maynilad strictly complies with national water quality standards, providing safe and reliable water to our customers,” said Maynilad Chief Sustainability Officer, Atty. Roel S. Espiritu. “This partnership allows us to anticipate future challenges by exploring advanced technologies and ensuring that our treatment systems remain robust and adaptive.”

The research will also support Maynilad’s development of advanced treatment methods such as UV photolysis and advanced oxidation to address potential emerging contaminants. These innovations are key to initiatives like Direct Potable Reuse, which aims to further enhance water sustainability while maintaining the highest safety standards.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base. It is the concessionaire of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (certain portions), Quezon City (certain portions), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario, all in Cavite Province.
