Maynilad marks 15th year of re-privatization

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) recently marked its 15th anniversary as a re-privatized company under Metro Pacific Investments Corp., DMCI Holdings, and Marubeni Corp.

In its 15 years of operation under new owners, Maynilad was able to exit court-administrated rehabilitation after prepaying US$240 million worth of external loans, and implement a ₱210-billion capital expenditure program that significantly improved water and wastewater services in the West Zone.

From 32% in 2006, Maynilad customers who now have 24-hour water supply have increased to 97.5% by the end of 2021. Meanwhile, those who receive their water supply at the acceptable pressure of 7 psi have nearly doubled from 45% to 86.3% during the same period.

Within 15 years, Maynilad also increased its customer base from only 6.1 million at the end of 2006 to almost 10 million by 2021. Included among these new customers are households and establishments in areas that used to be waterless, and relied on shallow wells or on unsafe and expensive water deliveries from private deep well operators.

“The significant improvement in Maynilad services is due in great part to our employees, whose hard work and dedication enabled the company to withstand major financial, regulatory, operational and environmental challenges over the years. We will continue to push on, so that service enhancements can be sustained despite new hurdles brought on by climate change and rising water demand,” said Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base. It is the concessionaire of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (certain portions), Quezon City (certain portions), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and, Malabon, all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta, and Rosario, all in Cavite Province.

During the event, Maynilad recognized its former presidents and partners for their contributions to the company, and also celebrated the 76th birthday of Maynilad Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan (3rd from left). Present were (from left) Maynilad director and former MPIC president Jose Maria K. Lim, former Maynilad director Atty. Marilyn Victorio-Aquino, Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez, and former Maynilad presidents Rogelio L. Singson and Victorico P. Vargas.
