Maynilad recently launched its newest Corporate Social Responsbility (CSR) project in Barangay 123 in Tondo, Manila. Dubbed Samahang Tubig Maynilad (STM), the project provides potable and affordable water to 1,000 waterless households in the said community.
STM was developed to address the problems of water inaccessibility and irresponsible water use in Maynilad’s concession area. Under the project, residents of urban poor communities are organized and given training to make sure that they are capable of sustaining the water management programs in their communities.
Maynilad’s pilot STM community in Tondo covers the stretch of waterless households from Zaragoza to Pochero St. in Brgy. 123 along Road 10 in Tondo, Manila. Through the community’s newly formed “STM Barangay 123 Tondo Chapter”, residents can buy potable water at the affordable price of P10 per drum. Before Maynilad’s project, residents bought water from private vendors for P30 per drum.
Maynilad president Rogelio Singson encouraged the new STM community to serve as a model for other poor and waterless communities in the West Zone. “This is Maynilad’s way of providing water for all, especially to the poor who should not be paying excessively for a basic service such as water,” he said.
