Metro Pacific Investments Corporation and DMCI Holdings-led Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) has earmarked P78.8 billion for its sewerage and sanitation project until 2037 – the year when the water company’s concession agreement with the Philippine Government will end.
Including the cost of land acquisition that will be used in the construction of sewerage treatment plants (STPs), Maynilad will spend P5.1 billion for the period 2009-2012, another P18.5 billion for 2013-2016, and P27.2 billion for 2017-2021 to hit 66% sewerage coverage. From 2022-2037, Maynilad will aim for 100% sewer coverage in its concession area, and will allot P28 billion for its completion.
Engr. Antonio Garcia, Maynilad’s Head of Sewerage and Sanitation, shared that for Maynilad to have 100% sewerage coverage, it has to put up treatment facilities with a combined capacity of around 1.6 million cubic meters/day.
To facilitate the implementation of its sewerage projects, Maynilad has adopted the Combined Sewerage System (CSS). “CSS has proven to be the most cost-effective and least disruptive option that allows Maynilad to hasten its sewerage projects, expand coverage, and speed up our initiatives that will protect the environment,” said Garcia. “However, in areas where space constraints prevent us from building a centralized treatment plant, we break up the area into smaller sections and construct smaller STPs to treat the wastewater,” added Garcia.
Currently, Maynilad is constructing five wastewater treatment facilities in Quezon City and supporting multi-sectoral efforts to clean up major water systems such as the Pasig River and Manila Bay. Aside from providing regular septic tank cleaning to its customers, Maynilad has also provided free sewer connections to households and establishments located along waterways in order to reduce wastewater discharges to these waterways.
Maynilad is the private water and wastewater services provider for the West Zone which is composed of the cities of Manila (all but portions of San Andres and Sta. Ana), Quezon City (west of San Juan River, West Avenue, EDSA, Congressional, Mindanao Avenue, the northern part starting from the Districts of the Holy Spirit and Batasan Hills), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon—all in Metro Manila; Cavite City, and the towns of Bacoor, Imus, Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario—all in Cavite Province.
