West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) has completed the upgrade of its South Septage Treatment Facility in Pamplona, Las Piñas City, bringing the facility into compliance with stricter Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) effluent standards.
Implemented from 2023 to 2026, the upgrade enables the facility to comply with DENR Administrative Order (DAO) 2016-08, as amended by DAO 2021-19. The South Septage Treatment Facility is the first of Maynilad’s three septage treatment facilities to be fully upgraded under the latest regulatory requirements.
A key enhancement is the integration of the Conventional Activated Sludge Four-Stage Bardenpho process, an advanced biological treatment process that improves the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. By reducing these nutrients before treated water is discharged, the upgraded process helps minimize pollutant loading into receiving water bodies and lessen potential nutrient-related environmental impacts.
“This investment is about keeping our wastewater facilities aligned with increasingly stringent environmental requirements and continuously improving the quality of treatment we provide,” said Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez. “The upgraded facility enables us to improve effluent quality and reduce pollutant loading into the environment as we continue strengthening sanitation services in the southern West Zone.”
The South Septage Treatment Facility began operations in December 2015 and treats septage collected from septic tanks in the southern portion of Maynilad’s West Zone.
The facility currently has a treatment capacity of 300 cubic meters per day (CMD) and serves customers in Pasay, Makati, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, and Cavite.
The project forms part of Maynilad’s continuing investments to improve sanitation and wastewater management across its concession area. Maynilad also operates septage treatment facilities in Project 7, Quezon City, and Dagat-dagatan, Caloocan City.
Maynilad operates the largest water concession by population served within a single concession area in the Philippines. It is a concessionaire of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (certain portions), Quezon City (certain portions), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon, all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the municipalities of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario, all in Cavite Province.
