The environment, safety and health initiatives of Maynilad reflect its commitment to excellence and improved quality of life. Under the Asset from Waste project of Maynilad, septage and biosolids are converted into a safer and cheaper alternative to chemical fertilizers. By partnering with the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) and the Farmers’ Cooperative of Pampanga, Maynilad is able to supply Pampanga and Tarlac farmers with organic fertilizer that could be used in growing sugarcane. The success generated by this partnership has prompted farmers to use Maynilad’s organic fertilizer on crops such as mangoes, jackfruit and other fruit-bearing trees. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Region III has also signed an agreement with Maynilad for the use of biosolids in DENR’s urban regreening program. Maynilad is regularly involved in tree-planting activities at the La Mesa, Angat and Ipo watersheds. Employees are also encouraged to participate in fund-raising events to help reforest Metro Manila’s water sources. Being a strong advocate of health and safety, Maynilad supports a number of programs protecting the welfare of its employees, business partners and customers. It carries the distinction of being the first water company in the Philippines to produce a Water Safety Plan (WSP), which details the company’s risk assessment and contingency procedures in case of a water quality impairment. Described by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the most comprehensive WSPs in the world, it is now used as a model and reference material by other water companies in the Philippines. Every year, Maynilad holds its Gawad Kaligtasan at Kalusugan (GKK) Award to recognize the exemplary achievements of its employees, operating units and projects in promoting workplace safety and health. The event also demonstrates the company’s full support to the Zero
Accident Program (ZAP) of the Occupational Safety and Health Center Department
of the Department of Labor and Employment.
